Purpose:
The State of Florida requires everyone working in a hospice or nursing facility dedicated to caring for persons with chronic confusion or a dementing illness to complete two modules on care of persons with Alzheimer’s disease or related disorders. This is the second of two modules and is the three-hour required course. All staff working in the long-term care setting will increase their knowledge and skills in caring for persons diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or a related disorder.
Objectives:
Upon completion of this online course, participants will be able to:
- Identify conditions that may mimic Alzheimer's disease or related disorders.
- Describe what is currently known about the causes of Alzheimer’s disease and how it is diagnosed.
- Identify the expected symptoms, explain how the disease progresses and challenging behaviors of memory-impaired persons.
- Describe common behaviors of persons with Alzheimer’s disease.
- Discuss how to provide personal care with Alzheimer’s disease guided by principles of independence and autonomy.
- Explain strategies and skills for assisting the caregiver of persons with Alzheimer’s disease with activities of daily living.
- Describe the types of activities that are positive and rewarding for persons with Alzheimer’s disease.
- Discuss the impact on the family and the strategies to assist them with coping and involvement in the program.
- Explain a safe, secure and supportive environment for persons with Alzheimer’s disease, and staff.
- Identify the common ethical conflicts that may arise when caring for persons with Alzheimer’s disease.
