MGR106 - Social Media Usage in Health Care (For Admins) (1.0 HR)

Purpose: In this course intended for nursing and management staff in the long-term care setting you will learn what is social media, what privacy rights residents have related to social media, and types of possible criminal abuse via social media. You will study what the August 5, 2016 Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) memo mandated that nursing homes do in regards to social media, including creating and implementing policies, training staff, and responding and reporting allegations of abuse. In June 2016, the American Health Care Association/National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL) gave written guidance to members about what these policies may encompass, which will be discussed. Objectives: 1) Define nursing home staff for the purposes of the August 5, 2016 CMS social media memorandum; 2) Describe a nursing home resident’s right to personal privacy; 3) Discuss the abuse prohibition as it relates to social media in the nursing home setting; 4) Name various social media sites and platforms and intended uses for each; 5) List three federal requirements regarding abuse and staff treatment of residents; 6) List two federal requirements for staff training on abuse and social media policy; 7) Summarize the steps a nursing home must take in response to allegations of abuse as it pertains to social media policy mandate; 8) Explain state survey agency responsibilities to review facility social media policies and procedures and investigate allegations of abuse; 9) Give examples of other suggestions for social media policy and procedures.
