Series - 4 Hour Administrator: Dementia Training for Administrators (4.0 HR)
Purpose: All staff working in the long term care setting will increase their knowledge and skills in caring for persons diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or a related disorder. Objectives: 1. Describe Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), how the brain works and how it is affected by AD; 2. Discuss how memory loss from AD and other related disorders differs from normal aging; 3. Explain neurological diseases or conditions that can cause irreversible dementia and other conditions or disorders that may result in symptoms that mimic AD; 4. Describe stages of Alzheimer's disease and related symptoms and behaviors; 5. Discuss how AD is diagnosed, the causes, cures, and research; 6. Describe communication strategies used with Alzheimer’s patients; 7. Discuss philosophy of care; 8. Describe common staff and family issues encountered when caring for Alzheimer’s patients; 9. Explain techniques used for activities of daily living; 10. Describe activities suitable for the Alzheimer’s patient; 11. Discuss the ethical dilemmas caregivers face when caring for Alzheimer’s patients.
