NUR187 - Pressure Ulcer: Etiology (2.5 HR)

Purpose: The healthcare professional will gain foundational knowledge of the skin and the factors that affect healing and repair. The healthcare professional will review the NPUAP staging guidelines for pressure ulcers and the risk factors for developing a pressure ulcer. The healthcare professional will review basic strategies that can be used in the management of pressure ulcers. Objectives: 1. Describe the distinct layers of the skin; 2. Explain the normal physiology of healing; 3. Identify the reasons why individuals have difficulty healing chronic wounds; 4. Explain the incidence and prevalence of pressure ulcers; 5. Identify risk factors for developing pressure ulcers; 6. Demonstrate pressure ulcer staging; 7. List at least 3 organizations that are resources for anyone responsible for managing chronic pressure ulcers in patients; 8. Name two tools that can be used to identify patients who are at risk for developing a pressure ulcer; 9. Explain at least 5 procedures that can be used to manage chronic pressure ulcers.
