REG120 - Dementia: Communication, Behavior Management, and Abuse Prevention (1.0 HR)


Purpose: This course discusses the care of individuals with dementia and is intended to meet the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) requirements for dementia training. Topics covered include communication, behavior management, abuse prevention, and dementia. All staff working in the long-term care setting will increase their knowledge and skills in caring for people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia. Objectives: 1) Describe how dementia affects communication skills; 2) Discuss strategies and guidelines for verbal and nonverbal communication when caring for people with dementia; 3) List common challenging behaviors associated with dementia; 4) Outline strategies and techniques for dealing with common challenging behaviors associated with dementia; 5) List five types of elder abuse; 6) Review legal timelines for reporting elder abuse; 7) Summarize strategies to prevent elder abuse.
