NUR125 - Cultural Differences in Death and Dying (1.0 HR)

Purpose: The purpose of this course is to understand the cultural importance of the individual and those directly affected including family and friends in dealing with illness and death. As the U.S. becomes more ethnically and racially diverse and culturally complex, there is a need to understand how to work with individuals who have values, health beliefs, and perspectives that are different from your own or those you are familiar with. Objectives: 1. Describe an operational definition of culture and cultural competency; 2. Discuss the concept of spirituality and the requirements of regulatory bodies such as the Joint Commission and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS); 3. Identify the significance of culture at the time of illness and death; 4. Identify one’s own self-awareness of culture; 5. Identify the stages of professional cultural competency; 6. List cultural backgrounds and rituals around the world and throughout the United States; 7. Discuss the DSM-IV diagnostic category Religious or Spiritual Problem and the category of non-pathological problems.
