NUR166 - Nutrition and Hydration of the Older Adult Patient (2.5 HR)

Purpose: Health care professionals will increase their understanding of the nutrition and hydration needs of their elderly patients. Objectives: 1. Define normal nutrition; 2. List the essential nutrients; 3. Describe the nutrition and hydration requirements of the elderly; 4. Describe the four basic facility diets; 5. State the purpose of calorie counts and food intake studies; 6. Define dysphagia and explain the risks of this condition; 7. Describe the general care of the patient with dysphagia and swallowing problems; 8. State the purposes of therapeutic diets; 9. List the types of alternative nutrition; 10. Describe the appropriate nursing interventions to assist patients in obtaining adequate nutrition and hydration.
