CNA114 - Oral Hygiene for Direct Care Personnel (1.0 HR)

Purpose: Oral hygiene is an important part of daily patient care. It is necessary as it prevents bad breath and gum infection, cavities and tooth decay. In addition, it promotes your patient's comfort and improves their quality of life. General health is improved because food tastes better, appetite is improved, and they will eat better. This course will enhance the direct care personnel’s understanding of the benefits of and correct procedures for oral hygiene. Objectives: 1) Discuss the causes of tooth decay; 2) List the signs and symptoms of periodontal disease; 3) Identify systemic diseases linked to poor oral hygiene; 4) Review signs and symptoms of systemic diseases found within the mouth; 5) Outline the oral care needs of people with dentures; 6) Detail proper procedures for oral care with the conscious and nonresponsive resident. Continuing Education Credits: 1.0 contact hours Iowa BON #335; 1.0 contact hours CA Board of Nursing CEP 14033; 1.0 contact hours CE Broker # 50-4572 Florida and District of Columbia; 0 contact hours for Social Work State of Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.
