ALL107 - The Importance of Effective Communication in Health Care (1.0 HR)

Purpose: Health care workers in long-term care will learn the elements of effective communication, as well as techniques to implement within their workplace that will enhance their connections with colleagues and residents. Challenges to communication are addressed in this course as well as ways to best communicate with teammates and residents, and staff in other facilities or hospitals. Topics include considerations for personal preferences and identifiers, such as in persons with disabilities; cultural norms; inter- and intrafacility communication; and effective communication methods.

Objectives:

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Explain effective communication.
  2. Describe the Joint Commission’s three-pronged approach to effective communication in health care.
  3. Define health literacy.
  4. Demonstrate person-first language in health care.
  5. Explain the role of cultural competence in effective communication.
  6. Implement methods for effective inter- and intrafacility communication.
